“[Culture is] the leading exponent of conscious reggae.”
—The New York Times
Over 30 musicians turn six hours of reggae, Rasta blues and afro-beat music into a festival within the Festival. Celebrate the vibrant musical interchange between Africa, Jamaica and America’s Southland on the shores of Lake Champlain.
Beginning with the release of the mythic Two Sevens Clash (Shanachie) in 1977, Culture has defined roots music. Born in the 70's golden age of reggae, the band has released over 28 albums and garnered continual U.S. and international acclaim. The spirit of Joseph Hill, the band’s beloved cofounder and vocalist, shines through in the charismatic presence and sound of his son Kenyatta Hill.
“[Corey Harris creates] raw, direct emotion…richly expressive music.”

Corey Harris’ fearless music carries the tradition of classic African-influenced blues music into the 21 century and celebrates the seamless interplay of cultures through sound. Harris was featured on the acclaimed 2003 PBS television mini-series The Blues in an episode directed by Martin Scorsese and his nine acclaimed albums include the landmark Mississippi to Mali (Rounder), an album fusing blues music from northern Mali. Discover Jazz is honored to present Harris backed by Culture in tonight’s special performance.
Featuring a virtual who's who of Vermont music, the 12-piece ensemble Movement of the People: Fela Kuti Project approaches each show with a dedication to the spirit of Kuti’s messages of democracy and freedom and commitment to the power and joy within his musical legacy.
