Dave Brubeck has cultivated one of the most distinctive piano styles in jazz for more than 50 years, combining an acute and delicate lyrical sense with a powerful and dramatic musical force. Add to this his clear connection to the history of jazz piano, including stride and honky tonk, and you find an iconoclast both popular and controversial. Pushing beyond the traditional forms and standard techniques of American jazz, this musical pioneer changed the landscape of jazz in the 1950s and 1960s, broadening its audience and recording the first jazz album to go gold. Regarded as a genius in his field, Brubeck has recorded with his quartet some of jazz’s timeless classics like Take Five and Blue Rondo a La Turk. He has been inducted into the DownBeat Jazz Hall of Fame, won a Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award, and continues to provide educational opportunities for the next generation of jazz musicians through the Brubeck Institute—all while exploring new avenues in composition and delivering thrilling performances.
