Adventure, freedom and flexibility are the pillars of Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher’s music. Through their splashing harmonies and fitful rhythms, the Dutch group eschews the dynamic of the traditional trio format – bass player Wilbert de Joode and drummer Michael Vatcher have just as much influence on the direction of the improvisations as pianist Michiel Braam, one of the most prolific band leaders on the Dutch jazz scene whose kinship with the work of Cecil Taylor and Thelonius Monk is abundantly clear. The 20-year musical friendship of the trio shines in powerful pieces, honoring the jazz tradition by pushing it ahead with consummate, dazzling skill, yielding intuitive playing of the highest order.
